We, the undersigned voters, pursuant to Section 402 of the Middletown Town Charter, request the Town Council adopt the attached ordinance regarding the study and establishment of a
regional school district.
ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF MIDDLETOWN, RHODE ISLAND
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE TOWN CODE OF THE TOWN OF MIDDLETOWN
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED AS FOLLOWS:
That pursuant to Section 402 of the Town Charter, the Town Code of the Town of Middletown be amended by adding the following ordinance thereto:
FIRST: The Town shall create a Regional School District Planning Committee pursuant to RIGL § 16-3-4, which shall consist of three (3) members, two (2) of whom shall be appointed by the President of the Town Council and one (1) of whom shall be appointed by the Chairperson of the School Committee.
SECOND: The Town’s Regional School District Planning Committee shall join with the City of Newport to form a Regional Planning Board to study the advisability of establishing a regional school district and to submit a report of its findings, recommendations and any proposed agreement(s) to the Town and City Councils and the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education pursuant to RIGL §§ 16-3-5, 16-3-6, 16-3-7 and 16-3-8.
THIRD: This ordinance is intended to provide the authority to engage in the study, planning, and development of a plan to establish a regional school district with the City of Newport, which will be presented to the voters pursuant to RIGL §§ 16-3-9 and 16-3-10.
FOURTH: This ordinance shall take effect upon its adoption and all ordinances and parts of ordinances inconsistent herewith are hereby repealed. *Revised and updated 2/7/2020
